It is no secret that Charlestonians like to socialize and have a good time. We’re simply upholding the grand tradition of living well established by the colony’s founding families, those cosmopolitan pilgrims who hosted the first opera performed in America, built the first theatre in America, landscaped gardens that exist today as the oldest in America, founded the first musical society in America, opened the first public museum in America, planted the first tea in America, and… formed the first golf club in America, which played rounds on the first golf course in America!

In 1786, a sporting band of Scottish merchants made history when they sank our nation’s first putt at Charleston’s Harleston Green, a popular park also used for horse races and cricket matches.

Two hundred and five years later, the picturesque, 72-par Ocean Course opened on Kiawah Island. While this windswept course has played host to the 1991 Ryder Cup, 1997 and 2003 World Cup and 2007 Senior PGA, we fondly recall its starring role in The Legend of Bagger Vance, a film directed by Robert Redford that featured Charlize Theron, Will Smith and Matt Damon.
